Ruth Ann Buzzi was born on
July 24th, 1936 in Westerly Rhode Island, where her family was in the headstone
business.
Her first television "appearance" was actually her voice. She portrayed various characters in the Hanna Barberra cartoon The Jetsons in 1962. She became a regular on the T.V. program The Entertainers in 1964. In 1967 she was a regular on That Girl playing Marge "Pete" Peterson. In 1967 she was selected and became a regular on Laugh-In. Ruth created characters such as the meddling mother-in-law, a bar room lush, lady of the evening and her most famous character, Gladys Ormphby. She was the old lady who constantly hit Arte Johnson's character Tyrone F. Hornigh over the head with her handbag. For her various characters she was nominated for two Emmys and won a Golden Globe. Besides Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, she was the only cast member to appear in every Laugh-In episode, including the 1967 special. In 1974 when Laugh-In's run was over she was nominated for another Emmy for her work on an episode of The Dean Martin Show. Throughout the 70's and 80's she appeared in various movies and T.V. shows. Included in those were roles in the movie Freaky Friday and playing Screech Powers' mother in Saved By The Bell. In 1993 she became a part of the cast of Sesame Street, where she portrays Ruthie, the owner of Finder's Keepers. She has been most recently seen on an episode of 7th Heaven, and on March 1st 2002 she appeared with George Schlatter and Jo Anne Worley on CBS This Morning with Bryant Gumble.
